Diode Laser vs IPL: What Is the Difference?

Both approaches use light to target pigment around the hair follicle, but they do not produce light in the same way. Device design, settings, cooling, skin and hair characteristics all matter, so the technology name alone cannot predict an individual result.

Laser light and broad-spectrum pulsed light

A diode platform uses semiconductor laser emitters at defined wavelengths. IPL is an intense pulsed light source that uses filters to deliver a broader wavelength band. Both can be configured for hair reduction, but IPL is not a laser.

Skin Glow Studio uses a diode platform combining 755, 808, 940 and 1064 nm wavelengths with sapphire contact cooling; it does not offer IPL hair-removal sessions.

What comparative research can tell us

Published comparisons have reported hair reduction with diode, alexandrite and IPL systems. Results vary between studies, devices and protocols. One 232-person comparison found no significant difference in optimal reduction at six months, while reporting higher reduction and more side effects in its diode group.

A smaller prospective comparison also found reduced hair counts with all tested systems. These findings do not prove that every diode device is better than every IPL device, or that either method suits every person.

Why settings and assessment matter

Wavelength is only one part of a session. Pulse duration, energy, spot size, cooling, technique, service area, hair colour and skin response affect the plan. Study results obtained with one device and protocol should not be transferred directly to another device.

Tell the studio about recent sun exposure, medication, pregnancy, active irritation or a skin concern before proceeding. A trained specialist should assess suitability and choose settings; this page cannot determine whether the service is appropriate for you.

Questions to ask before choosing

Ask which device and handpiece will be used, what wavelengths it emits, how cooling works, who selects the settings and how the studio responds if the skin is irritated. Also ask how the selected area is defined and whether the quoted price comes from the current service catalog.

  • Is the device a laser or an IPL system?
  • Which wavelengths and cooling method does it use?
  • How are settings selected for the area and person?
  • What preparation and aftercare instructions apply?

Frequently asked questions

Is IPL a laser?

No. IPL uses filtered broad-spectrum pulsed light, while a diode laser produces light at defined laser wavelengths.

Is diode always more effective than IPL?

Research does not support a universal answer for every device and person. Comparative results depend on the equipment, protocol, area and participant group.

Can this guide tell me which option is suitable for my skin?

No. Suitability and settings require an individual assessment. Tell the studio about tanning, medication, pregnancy, irritation and skin concerns before a specialist decides whether to proceed.

What technology does Skin Glow Studio use?

The studio uses a diode platform combining 755, 808, 940 and 1064 nm wavelengths with sapphire contact cooling.

Discuss the device and your selected area

Review the current services, then ask the studio how the diode platform and consultation process apply to your selected area.
