How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal

Good preparation helps the specialist choose appropriate settings and keeps the session comfortable. These are the general steps the studio asks every client to follow — the instructions you receive when booking are the ones that apply to you.

Shave — don't wax, pluck or epilate

Laser hair removal works on the hair inside the follicle, so the root needs to be there. Avoid waxing, plucking, sugaring and epilators on the area before your session.

Shaving is different: it removes the hair above the skin and leaves the follicle in place. Shaving the area yourself before the visit is always the preferred option.

If it's an area you can't shave easily yourself, choose "Shave at the studio" when booking and the staff will shave it before your session — the booking form shows the added fee and time.

Avoid direct sun for 12–24 hours before

Keep the area out of direct sun for the 12–24 hours before your session. Sun exposure and tanning before a session can make the skin more reactive and may change which settings are appropriate. If your skin is recently tanned or sunburned, tell the studio before the visit — the specialist may adjust the plan or suggest a later date.

On the day of your session

A few simple steps make the session easier for you and the specialist.

  • Arrive with clean, dry skin on the area
  • Skip creams, oils and deodorant on the area that day
  • Avoid products that irritate the skin on the area in the days before

Tell the studio first if any of these apply

Some situations need the specialist's review before a session goes ahead. The studio uses this check to decide whether to proceed, adjust the plan or postpone. If you are unsure whether something is relevant, mention it anyway.

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Broken, injured or inflamed skin on the area
  • Active herpes, or a chronic illness that is not under control
  • Photosensitivity, or isotretinoin or other retinoid use
  • A pacemaker or other implanted electronic device
  • A clotting disorder, blood thinners or a serious heart condition
  • Any other medication you are currently taking

Frequently asked questions

Should I shave before laser hair removal?

Yes — shaving removes the hair above the skin while leaving the follicle in place, which is what the laser needs. Shaving at home is preferred; for an area you can't reach easily, choose "Shave at the studio" when booking and the staff will do it.

Why can't I wax before laser hair removal?

Waxing, plucking, sugaring and epilators pull the hair out from the root, and the laser needs that root to be present. Switch to shaving before your sessions, and ask the studio how long to wait if you waxed recently.

Can I have laser hair removal if I have a tan?

Tell the studio before your visit. Recent tanning can make the skin more reactive, so the specialist reviews it in person and may adjust settings or recommend waiting.

Can I wear deodorant before an underarm session?

Skip deodorant, creams and oils on the area on the day of your visit and arrive with clean, dry skin.
